The Search Problem

When you type a word into Google, the search engine has to pick which websites to show you first.

There are billions of web pages out there, but you only see about ten results on the first screen.

SEO is the work of making your website one of those ten.

Google's Job

Google runs a program called an algorithm that reads every webpage it can find.

The algorithm looks for clues: what words appear on the page, how many other sites link to it, how fast it loads.

Then it ranks all the pages by how useful it thinks each one is to answer your search.

The Three Pillars

SEO has three main parts: the words on your page must match what people search for.

Other websites must link to yours, because links are votes for your trustworthiness.

Your page must work well on phones and load in under three seconds, because Google rewards fast sites.

The Real Trade Off

A common mistake is writing only for the algorithm, stuffing pages with keywords no human wants to read.

But Google's job is to please the person searching, not the website owner.

The websites that rank best are the ones that help the reader first, and happen to use the right words while doing it.

Time and Scale

SEO is not paid advertising; you do not write a check to Google and appear at the top.

Instead, changes to a website can take two to four months to show up in search results.

About ninety-three per cent of all web traffic starts with a search engine, which is why this patience matters.

Why It Matters

A business that ranks on page one of Google gets vastly more visitors than one on page three.

SEO is how small websites compete without spending a fortune on ads.

It is the difference between being invisible and being found.
